The backside line is that Black Noise is an excellent and extremely ingenious piece. It makes no concessions to in style tastes, but maintains its edgy quality from start to end without compromise. Although probably not jazz, the jazz-inspired rhythms, mixed in as they’re with very complex, unusual meters, is extraordinarily challenging for the performers, but conductor Gil Rose and his Boston Modern Orchestra Project play it with a positive grasp of the complete structure.
